Generally speaking, the headliner cabs from Margaret River are bright, rich and varietal with well-integrated tannins. Upon tasting Houghton’s latest release of their iconic Gladstones cabernet, I immediately thought of Bordeaux rather than Margs. There’s a subtlety and structure to the wine and it’s a bit more medium-bodied than a lot of its regional brethren. It’s exceptionally elegant and balanced with not a single hair out of place. The fruit is there in the form of blackberry and cassis, but it’s the secondary herbal characteristics and hints of graphite from the oak that really carry the day. Just an absolutely compelling wine that has decades ahead of it. Truly something special. No wonder James Halliday gave it 98 points.
