There’s a theory behind the practice of blending other varietals with cabernet in Bordeaux. The vignerons say that cabernet is a bit of a donut on the palate, big and rich around the sides with a hole in the middle. That’s where the other varietals come into play. While malbec isn’t commonly known as a Bordeaux grape, it has a home there. So when this West Australian winemaker followed the path of those classic French winemakers, he was venturing down a well-worn path. The result is a wine with all the varietal hallmarks of cabernet surrounding some extra oomph in the form of earthiness, spice and dark black fruit provided by malbec.
